Day 2: Lima
On arrival, you'll be met at the airport and driven to your hotel where you can settle in and freshen up. When you're ready, head out to experience life in Lima, rebooting your system with a fiery cup of coffee (and maybe postpone your first pisco sour until later in the day) at one of the many little cafes. Explore Plaza de Armas in the historic heart of the city. As you look around, you will see the magnificent architecture of the cathedral, Governor’s Palace, and the town hall with its superb library. Lima also has some exceptional museums and art galleries, and has experienced a gastronomic revolution in recent years, so you can choose between Peruvian classics or innovative fusion food. Rest your head at the end of the day at Atemporal, a lovely 9 bedroom boutique hotel in the fashionable Miraflores neighbourhood (images below)
Day 3: Fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado
Begin your Amazon adventure by taking a 45 minute boat ride to Reserva Amazonica, deep in the Amazon basin, absorbing the verdant jungle colours and extraordinary wildlife. You’ll take a tour along high canopy walkways, hanging bridges and treetop platforms. Then return to your your comfortable cabana, your lantern-lit jungle hideaway.
Day 4: Reserva Amazonica
Waking up to the mesmerising sound of the jungle, today you'll explore the boardwalk over rainforest swamps and see the transition of the rainforest ecosystem to marshland, spotting birds and reptiles along the way. In the afternoon take a tranquil boat trip to Lake Sandoval, where you’ll encounter strikingly colourful parrots, giant otters and deadly piranhas.
Day 5: Fly to Cuzco
Leaving the rainforest behind, fly to the former Inca capital of Cuzco and discover the tranquil, grassy wonderland of the Sacred Valley, staying at Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba. The beautiful Sacred Valley has colourful and lively markets, charming flower-filled plains and some of the most
impressive historic Inca sites in Peru.
Day 6: Explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas
Highlights include the colourful town of Chinchero and the impressive Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo. This magical, mystical landscape was the epicentre of the Inca empire that thrived here half a millennia ago, leaving behind the remnants of one of the world's greatest civilisations. Much of it remains in remarkable condition. Overnight at Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba.
Day 7: Urubamba to Machu Picchu
After a scenic train journey, arrive at the bustling town of Aguas Calientes. Step into another world as you explore Machu Picchu, the spectacular Lost City of the Incas.
