Best time to go: October to April

Our tailor-made holidays in Oman enable you to experience the country's rich history and modern vibrancy, from your beach sanctuary near bustling Muscat to a luxury clifftop hideaway in the mighty Al Hajar mountains, visiting ancient Nizwa and Jabrin castle, and enjoying the peace and serenity of the vast Omani desert from the comfort of your luxury desert refuge in the Wahiba Sands.

Day 1: UK to Muscat

Overnight flight to Muscat - in order to maximise your time in Oman

Day 2: Muscat

On arrival, you'll be met at the airport and driven to your hotel - The Chedi Muscat (images below) - where you can settle in and freshen up. When you're ready, we will take you into the bustling hospitality of one of the Middle East's friendliest nations and tour the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. You can step back in time at the Bait Al Zubair museum, viewing Omani antiquities. Glide along the attractive corniche to the Muttrah Souq, where you can haggle with locals for bargains.

Day 3: Muscat to Al Hajar Mountains

Today, we'll drive you into the mountains, en route visiting the fish market in Barka and watching sunbaked forts and oasis towns slip past the window. The road twists through dramatic peaks and canyons to Bilad Sayt, a hillside village. Pass mud houses and date plantations before reaching Alila Jabal Akhdar, carved high in the Al Hajar mountains and peering down over the rugged landscape. This luxurious mountain retreat, set 2,000m above sea level, overlooking plunging canyons, will be your home for the next 3 nights.

Day 4: Al Hajar Mountains

Your driver / guide will take you to explore the surroundings, starting at Nizwa, an attractive hill town that stands out against the surrounding hills. You'll get a chance to see the thriving livestock market. Explore the pretty village of Birkat Al Mauz before heading to the green jewel of the Al Hajar mountain range, Jebel Al Akhdar. Village-hop the hilltop settlements of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib and Al Ain, awash with the fragrance of perfumed rose water.

Overnight at Alila Jabal Akhdar

Day 5: Al Hajar Mountains

The day is yours to do as you please. Perhaps start with sunrise yoga before heading out to hike in the majestic surrounding landscape. Or, just relax and enjoy the panoramic views by the infinity-edge swimming pool or treat yourself in the spa. Overnight at Alila Jabal Akhdar

Day 6: Mountains to Wahiba Sands

Your adventure continues as you descend from the mountains to the desert, but before doing so you'll stop at Jabrin - Oman's finest castle - and the place to discover intricate paintings and beautifully executed woodcarvings. Winding up through the terraces you'll see Wadi Nakhr, the country's deepest ravine, before heading up to the highest peak, Jebel Shams. Then it's down to the desert at Wahiba Sands, a vast expanse of wilderness with giant dunes rising as high as 200m. Then spend the night under the stars at Desert Nights Camp - the ultimate desert refuge with luxury Bedouin style air-conditioned tents.

Day 7: Desert to Beach

After a leisurely breakfast, see how traditional dhow ships were made in Sur, en route to Wadi Arbayeen. Relax on Fins Beach or discover the pearl-white villages of Wadi Tiwi, before visiting the mysterious Bimah Sinkhole. As you skirt this dramatic coastline, look out for sharks in the waters below and gazelle moving among the hills inland. Return to Muscat in the evening to check into The Chedi Muscat again.

Day 8: Muscat to UK

Your 7 night adventure in Oman is now over and today it's time to fly home. Unless, of course, you would like to extend it by spending another day or two on the beach or venturing on to somewhere else in the Arabian Gulf.
