Sanctuary Lodge, Machu Picchu, Peru

Sanctuary Lodge has unrivalled proximity to the mystical Inca citadel

3 nights from around £1,200pp sharing a Deluxe Terrace Room on bed and breakfast basis
Flights and transfers available at additional cost

Sanctuary Lodge sits alone in splendid isolation at the entrance to the world’s most famous Inca citadel. As the only hotel standing adjacent to the formidable Urubmamba mountain range and tumbling stone steps of Machu Picchu, the lodge’s location is unbeatable. Many rooms face Huayna Picchu – the impossibly steep peak and hauntingly beautiful icon of the Andes panorama. Wake early and enjoy breakfast on your terrace while watching the dawn break through a cloak of darkness. By day, explore the Incan ruins – arrive before the hoards and leave long after they depart and then watch silence fall over the region from your outdoor hot tub.

Accommodation

An intimate hotel, with just 27 rooms and 2 suites. All are simply, yet stylishly furnished, with large comfortable beds dressed with warm duvets.

Pleasant as they are, however, the rooms (and everything else) play second fiddle to the location. No other hotel stands as close to the Inca citadel or offers such jaw-dropping views.

Activities & Experiences

The main highlight of a stay at Sanctuary Lodge are the tours and treks around Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, the Sun Gate,

the Temple of the Moon, Putucusi and the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes. The trekking is challenging at times and goes to high altitude so participants should be reasonably fit. Other activities include a Pachamama tribute ceremony, coca tea leaf reading, star gazing with

a resident astrologist, meditation and yoga.

Facilities & Services

The hotel has two restaurants serving authentic Peruvian and international cuisine, a bar, a gift shop and gorgeous gardens overlooking the surrounding landscape. And, being in such close proximity to the mystical and energising spirit of Machu Picchu, the hotel grounds have a tranquil area dedicated to relaxation, perfect for meditation and yoga. Alternatively, unwind after a long day of trekking and sightseeing with relaxing treatments at the spa, set in an alfresco style and surrounded by the peace of the garden, facing Huyana Picchu.

The hotel provides a complimentary bus service to Aguas Calientes (about 20 minutes away) throughout the day.

Weather & Seasons

April to November is the best time to visit Machu Picchu. The rainy season is typically from December to March.
