Ice Hotel, Lapland, Sweden
Built from scratch every year and literally one of the coolest hotel's on earth, offering a truly unique experience and the chance to see the Northern Lights
3 nights from around £400pp with 1 night in an Ice Art Suite and 2 nights in a Warm Kaamos Room, including daily breakfast. Flights and transfers available at additional cost.
Located 200km north of the Arctic Circle, a new Ice Hotel is built each year from ice harvested from the River Torne. A team of highly skilled engineers and artists work together to create the incredible structure, with no two designs ever the same. At -5 degrees, it's literally one of the coolest places in the world to stay! At the end of each season the spring sun thaws the walls and the ice rejoins the waters of the river.
Accommodation
As the whole hotel is rebuilt from scratch each winter, the style and size of rooms varies from year to year. Ice rooms are the entry-level of the cold rooms, while Art suites are the most impressive of all, with artists from all over the world selected to create new and unique room designs. We recommend just staying one night in the cold accommodation and then a few more in the warm accommodation. On arrival, you will check in at a smaller building neighbouring the hotel, reserved exclusively for guests staying in the cold accommodation; this building stays open 24 hours a day and houses a sauna, cosy log fire and hot lingonberry juice whenever you need it. Before spending the night in any of the icey suites, everyone has a full safety briefing regarding appropriate attire and how to make your bed with your arctic sleeping bag. The sleeping bags are designed for use in temperatures down to -25° C so, as the internal hotel temperature never drops below -5° C, they're more than adequate
for a comfortable night's sleep.
Activities & Experiences
Apart from marveling at the Auroras in the vast night sky, there are plenty of activities on offer to make your stay even more unforgettable. Everything from exploring by snowmobile, husky sledding, reindeer and moose safaris, and dropping in at a Sami campfire en route to sample some traditional food.
Facilities & Services
Ice Bar serves everything from steaming coffee to full-bodied red wine, whilst Ice Hotel's restaurant is in a cosy wooden building and serves immaculately presented meals complemented by an excellent wine list. Dishes feature local specialities including reindeer, elk, grouse and Arctic char. There is also a Champagne bar in the restaurant. Ice Hotel's second restaurant, in a large log cabin, serves a hearty a la carte menu in the evenings - and is a 10 minute stroll away.
Weather & Seasons
As nature is somewhat unpredictable, exact opening and closing dates vary. But you can be sure of it being open from December to March.
Getting Here
Flights from Heathrow go via Stockholm to Kiruna. On arrival in Kiruna the transfer to Jukkasjarvi takes about 15 minutes. Why not start the adventure instantly by transferring to Ice Hotel by snowmobile or husky sledge?
