Le Fort de Mogador, Essaouira, Morocco

Authentic, historical, luxury fully staffed courtyard house

Double Rooms from around £105 per night, including daily breakfast. Flights and transfers available on request.

This luxury hideaway just outside of Essaouira, in the heart of a small village, at the edge of an argan tree forest. The Atlantic Ocean is very close, with its immense and deserted beaches where the wind from the ocean tempers the Moroccan sunshine. The heart of the house is the riad, where a large inner courtyard garden is planted with palm trees and bougainvillea. A staircase leads to a huge terrace bathed in white light, for sunbathing or simple contemplation. At one corner of the closed garden is a heated swimming pool and steam room (traditional hammam).

The entire property is surrounded by magnificent gardens of mimosa, giant cacti, jasmine, papyrus, and oleanders.

Le Fort de Mogador is managed by a caretaker, steward and concierge. Rental fees include staff, housekeeping, cooking of local cuisine and delicious dishes according to your taste.

Neighbourhood

Essaouira is 8km away. It's a delightful 18th century seaside town, and the car-free Old Town is enclosed by fortified walls, alongside a series of vast sandy beaches backed by sand dunes. The town’s main square is filled with cafes and meandering walkways lead to the souk (market).

The villa is also close to Mogador Golf Course.

Weather & Seasons

Spring (March to May) is pleasantly warm and sunny, and the landscape is lush and green. If you want to spend a good amount of time in Essaouira, we suggest avoiding August as the town gets swamped by large numbers of visitors from home and abroad. Autumn (mid Sept to mid Nov) is also lovely, but the countryside tends to look parched.

Getting Here

Most visitors arrive via Marrakech’s Menara Airport, which you can reach from various airports in the UK with British Airways and Easyjet. Direct flights from London Gatwick take 3 hours 45 minutes. The drive from Marrakech takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Alternatively, there are direct flights with Royal Air Maroc from Paris Orly to Essaouira.

Recommendations Nearby

If your preference is to stay in Essaouira itself, boutique hideaways include L'Heure Bleue (with its rooftop pool) and Riad Madada Mogador. If you're after something with extensive facilities and that's more family orientated, we would suggest Sofitel Essaouira.
