Chinzombo, Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Luxurious riverside safari lodge with exceptional levels of service, accommodation and guiding

Available as part of a tailor-made tour of Zambia, or as part of a wider Africa itinerary, created by our safari specialists for you

Set on the banks of the Luangwa River and thronging with wildlife, it’s no wonder this luxurious, secluded camp has won so many awards and numerous fans. The only way to reach the lodge in Zambia’s game-rich South Luangwa National Park is to cross a river by boat. Originally established in the 1950s by pioneering Norman Carr, Chinzombo is now a small, intimate sanctuary with unrivalled levels of service and guiding.

Accommodation

Each of the six villas are vast and airy, and cleverly designed to blend in with the surroundings while pushing the boundaries of accommodation in Zambia. Each villa has its own separate living area, a private plunge pool and a cooled sleeping area, along with an enormous bathroom and a sweeping deck. Lavish luxury! One villa is designed for families, with two bedrooms. The camp was designed by award-winning architects, the noted team of Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, who also breathed life and luxe into Jao Camp in Botswana and North Island in the Seychelles.

Activities & Experiences

The camp is located within easy reach of the best game viewing in the Valley. Guests can choose to walk or drive - we recommend walking in the mornings when the temperature is cool and the animals are more active, and driving in the afternoons so you can extend through to a night drive and find the nocturnal animals. Chinzombo sits within 60 acres of private land with Luangwa River frontage; the views from its riverside location which is bustling with wildlife, plus the private, direct access into one of the most game rich areas of the National Park all combine to make this a truly special place. Daily safaris will mean you can get up close to the animals and take in the bush life.

Facilities & Services

Between safaris, you can enjoy spa treatments, make use of the exercise and yoga area, or relax beside your private plunge pool enjoying the river views. There are plenty of shady decks and fireside hangouts overlooking the Luangwa for quiet or social times and spotting game.

Weather & Seasons

Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: the rainy season from November to March (known as the Emerald season); winter is from April to July when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

Getting Here

10 hour international flight to Lusaka, followed by a 70 minute flight north east to Mfuwe where you are met for a game drive transfer to Chinzombo, through South Luangwa National Park. Approx. 3 hours.
