Just an hour south of Lisbon, Comporta is still a relatively unknown destination and remains deliciously wild and unspoilt. Sublime Comporta (as heavenly as its name suggests) is set amid a pine forest just moments from some of Portugal's best beaches. And 'wow', what beaches! This beautifully designed boutique hotel is the perfect escape from urban life with great food, just 14 fabulous rooms, suites and villas, a lovely little spa and a deeply relaxing get-away-from-it-all vibe. Explore Sublime Comporta

Just 30 minutes from Faro airport, Vila Joya is a wonderful family-run boutique hideaway set on a pretty, secluded beach. The hotel is particularly popular with foodies as it has a famously good Michellin starred restaurant plus, of course, more casual options. There's a lovely little spa, a swimming pool set in extensive gardens, and all the suites and bedrooms have sea views.

Set on the exclusive Vouliagmeni peninsula, The Margi is walking distance to the Athenian Riviera’s most beautiful sandy beaches and a short drive to Athens' historical sites. Luxury accommodation, contemporary styling, chic courtyard swimming pool, excellent poolside dining, stylish cabanas, and restorative spa. Join the smart Athenians before everyone else discovers this place. Discover The Margi

If you want a taste of what Capri and St Tropez were like in the 1950s, but for a smidgeon of the price, Monopoli is the spot. Fishermen still mend their nets and sell sardines from buckets by the harbour while wizened old ladies pinch out orecchiette with their thumbs. This romantic 10 bedroom townhouse (with fabulous roof terraces) is carved into the towns ancient defensive walls. Tucked away down a side street, Don Ferrante comes as a surprise to even the most seasoned Italophile, its discreet front door opening to reveal a maze of stone steps and corridors all leading to the same magical Adriatic panorama. The pool is tiny, but some of the best beaches in Italy are just minutes away, and guests have special access to the Hamptons-esque Coccaro Beach Club. Don Ferrante truly excels with its discreet first-class service. See Don Ferrante

Located in the bay of Turkbuku, Turkey’s answer to St Tropez, Macakizi is the glam place to stay near Bodrum. Lovers seeking romance and seclusion should come outside of high season (July and August), when the hotel turns into a magnet for the monied of Istanbul, and the Euro yacht set. May to June and September are the perfect time to stay at this chic Aegean hideaway. Make it Macakizi

Opened in early summer 2018, Elivi Skiathos is a 5* boutique beach resort on the west coast of the pretty Greek island of Skiathos. Location is everything: it's on a hillside on the west coast Pounta Peninsular, overlooking the endless blue of the Aegean Sea, surrounded by a wildlife refuge and with direct access to four beautiful beaches. Rooms, suites and villas are sprinkled around the resort's 200 acres, all exuding beach-shack-chic style: blonde woods, tassled cushions, and day beds next to plunge pools. Elivi Skiathos has two outdoor pools, an Elemis spa, indoor and outdoor gyms (with personal training available), and a tennis court. Plus, there's yoga, pilates, hiking, cycling and water sports. As it's such a lovely island, we recommend enjoying excursions by land or sea. Find out more about Elivi Skiathos

Charming, sophisticated, peaceful and remote - with luxurious accommodation, delicious cuisine, spectacular sea views and a delightful little spa. Located on the north east coast, this lovely boutique adult-only hideaway has just 18 rooms, 5 of which are suites. All are light, airy and spacious and we definitely recommend booking a room with sea views and, if budget allows, private terraces too. The property is split in two halves with most bedrooms in the main house on the clifftop, but a few more slightly more rustic in tone down in the Beach House. Can Simoneta is set in a privileged position on a cliff overlooking the sea to which it has direct access. Come for a long weekend (or longer) from Spring to Autumn. Take a look at Can Simoneta

Overlooking the magical Amalfi Coast, this elegant 12th century palazzo in the pretty village of Ravello has luxurious rooms, an indulgent spa, private beach club and Michelin star dining (and two less formal restaurants), all with breathtaking views. Perched high on the cliffs 300m above the Mediterranean, this romantic boutique hotel makes the most of its incredible location with light and airy marble interiors and stunning vistas. A boat trip along the coast or across to Capri is definitely to be recommended. Visit Amalfi in June or September for ideal temperatures and to avoid the crowds. See Palazzo Avino

A newcomer to this cosmopolitan island's already glittering hotel scene, Grace Mykonos is an elegant, intimate and luxurious boutique hideaway with excellent service. Set above the sandy beach of Agios Stefanos with gorgeous views of the Aegean and surrounding landscape, yet just 5 minutes from the shops, restaurants and nightlife of Mykonos town. Check out chic Grace Mykonos

Set on a tiny island at the end of an isthmus in the Adriatic Sea, Aman Sveti Stefan encompasses an entire 15th century fishing village and a former royal retreat - Villa Milocer - on a beautiful beach. Come and enjoy super-luxurious paired-back accommodation, 2 outdoor swimming pools, 3 beaches (one totally private), spa and indoor pool, yoga, pilates, fine dining, and guided excursions to the old towns of Budva and Cetinje and the beautifully-preserved baroque city of Perast, discovering the peaceful Skadar Lake and exploring the Bay of Kotor, a World Heritage Site. Consider the exceptional Aman Sveti Stefan

A small, great value 4 star hotel overlooking a glorious island studded bay, with towering mountains behind, and its own private beach. Located within strolling distance of the laid-back, pretty town of Göcek, this wonderful boutique hideaway is an ideal place to enjoy the sunshine on Turkey's beautiful south coast. It's just 25 minutes from Dalaman airport so you can be on the beach in no time. Look around D-Resort Göcek

Get that beach feel inside and out at boutique hotel U Capu Biancu, on the sunny shores of southern Corsica. Spend your holiday alternating between the hotel’s two private beaches and explore the coast by paddle board, canoe or catamaran. This stylish, rustic-chic hotel is an excellent 4* Corsican treat, 20 minutes from Bonifacio.

On the water's edge and set amidst pine, orange and lemon trees, Villa Dubrovnik is a boutique hideaway, with contemporary styling, superb service and top class accommodation, plus spectacular views of Dubrovnik Old Town and Lokrum island. We think this is the top place to stay in Dubrovnik, and love the complimentary boat transfer by a classic Riva to the Old Town. Remarkably for a country with such a long coastline and so many islands, there are practically no sandy beaches and this boutique Adriatic hideaway is, sadly, no exception. But don't let that put you off! There's a series of carefully sculpted terraces leading down to the sea, dotted with sun loungers, that does its best to make up for the region's absence of sand. If you've never explored Dubrovnik, make sure you stay at Villa Dubrovnik

Ibiza is sprinkled with a tantalising selection of boutique hideaways, but they are all tucked away in the hills. If you want to be on a beach, and Ibiza is your destination of choice, we think the island's best option is the new Nobu Hotel on Ibiza Bay. It can't really be described as boutique (it has 150 bedrooms and suites) but does have direct access to the sea, plus two freshwater swimming pools to choose from. As well as four great restaurants (including, of course, a fantastic Nobu restaurant for the ultimate epicurean experience), there is a small Six Senses Spa offering signature treatments and therapies, a gym and a yoga pavilion. Investigate Nobu Ibiza

Amanruya is a tranquil boutique hideaway on beautiful Mandalya Bay, on the north coast of the Bodrum Peninsula. Inspired by the region's traditional architecture and combining Mediterranean and Ottoman design elements, a series of courtyards and terraces on the hillside gives a village feel while still retaining a sense of space. This luxury enclave looks out over the Aegean Sea and has a private beach club on the protected bay. Each exquisite stone-clad guest pavilion has a private garden with a grey-green marble pool and pergola shading a large day bed. The interiors are spacious, airy and flooded with light - with white walls, grey marble floors and dark wood furnishings. Special offers occur occasionally. Grab one when they do. Make a note of Amanruya

Cap d'Antibes is set on a private beach in a beautiful setting along the French Riviera. Sleek in design with striking contemporary architecture, the hotel oozes elegance and a tranquility and ideally located close to the centre of Juan-les-Pins. Have a look at Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel

On a secluded private peninsula overlooking the Med, Cap Estel’s gated mansion is a superlative shot of Riviera glam. Surrounded palms and terraced gardens, with an elegant restaurant, spa, indoor and outdoor pools, private beach dotted with sunloungers, and with Monaco and Nice close by, this exclusive boutique retreat is A-list alluring. Once you've fully scoped out Cap Estel and its five acres, drive to Nice (7 miles) or Monaco (6 miles), and explore the designer boutiques, chic eateries and glamorous bars. The ancient fortified village of Èze, topped with 12th century castle ruins, also deserves a recce, as does the seaside town of Èze-sur-Mer, which has some pretty beaches and perfect picnic spots. See Cap Estel

OK, it's not Europe but it's still a short flight and has a longer warm, sunny season, so La Sultana Oualidia has made it on to our list. Overlooking a wide lagoon and the sand dunes of the Atlantic coast beyond, La Sultana Oualidia is a beautiful, peaceful, boutique beach hotel. With just 11 wonderful rooms and suites, all with large terraces and private salt-water Jacuzzis, this is a heavenly hideaway - with a lovely spa - awaiting discovery. If you don't want to spend all your time here relaxing by the pool, enjoying the views or being pampered in the spa, there are plenty of activities available. Surfing, windsurfing, stand-up paddle and kayaking are all recommended and a boat trip on the lagoon is a must. Fishing, bird watching safari, horse riding, yoga and walking are also an option and the vibrant Saturday market in Oualidia is well worth a visit.
